In July 2014, the presidents of a pro-marijuana group from Iowa State university, Erin Furleigh and Paul Gerlich, sued their school for alleged withdrawal of approval of one of the group’s marijuana-themed t-shirt with the school mascot in it. The ruling by U.S. District Judge James Geitzner favored the group of the ISU students.

GreenWay Iowa Iowa: Students May Mix Weed and School Logos To Promote PotJudge Gritzner granted the students from the ISU Chapter of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws a permanent injunction. This means university administrators may not be able to use the policy for students against them. They cannot prevent the organization from printing shirts featuring a marijuana leaf. According to him, strong evidence showed that the ISU administrators put a great deal of burden to suppress the group’s political expression.

As per the group’s attorney, Robert Corn-Revere, it doesn’t just mean that the students are free to combine school logos with a marijuana leaf, it meant much more. It meant that students at State Universities are still under, and protected by, the First Amendment and that Geitzner saw how the university administrators tried to violate the student’s rights.

And for Iowa State University, spokeswoman Annette Hacker expressed the institution’s disappointment on the ruling. According to her, the university is still going to consult with Iowa Attorney General’s office for any possibility of appeal.
