In 2014, the state of Iowa legalized the use of Medical Cannabidiol only for patients living with intractable epilepsy. The new law permits the possession of cannabis oil with less than 3% of THC content for patients (and caregivers of those patients) with severe epilepsy who are recommended by a licensed neurologist in Iowa to obtain a state-issued identification card. No one other than a neurologist is able to give a patient a recommendation for using cannabis oil. Registered patients cannot use cannabis oil in other states. As of now, there are no other conditions that qualify for use of cannabis oil other than severe or intractable epilepsy/seizure, even if the condition might benefit from the program. In order to legally use cannabis oil, patient and the designated caregiver must be registered and obtain state-issued identification cards with the Department of Public Health. The law does not state any minimum amount of CBD and does not extend legal protection for products with more than 3% THC. The Medical Cannabidiol Act governs the Department of Public Health of Iowa in collaboration with the Iowa Department of Transportation in establishing the process to approve and generate Cannabidiol Registry Cards for patients and their designated caregivers. Cannabidiol Registration Cards provide proof of documentation that patients and designated caregivers have met the requirements of the law and are authorized to legally possess medical cannabidiol for medical use.
